Milano, bad weather: interventions to clean underpasses and roads

Extraordinary cleaning also in the next few days. Between yesterday and today 130 thousand messages to citizens from the Municipality's alert system.

Milano, 15 May 2020 – With a concentration of rain between 100 and 130 mm of water, this night at Milano a third of the rain that has fallen since the beginning of the year fell in just a few hours. This led to the flooding of the Seveso river, which began at 3am and subsided at 8am this morning. The Lambro also flooded and this made it necessary to evacuate the Exodus and Ceas communities from their headquarters in the Lambro Park.

Thirty local police patrols were involved in the emergency tonight together with ten civil protection teams, which deployed another twenty in the morning and twenty in the afternoon today.

Since last night, Amsa has also been involved in cleaning operations, removing mud and unclogging road drains in the areas of Milano affected by the flooding of the Seveso river. During the day, the company deployed - in addition to the regular cleaning and sweeping services provided in the area - 22 dedicated vehicles per work shift: water pumps, drain pumps and washing machines.

The extraordinary cleaning and unblocking interventions mainly concern the streets and squares of the Niguarda and Isola districts, including Piazza Istria, Viale Ca' Granda, Viale Suzzani, Via Fulvio Testi, Viale Zara, Via Veglia and Via De Angelis. New extraordinary cleaning and mechanized washing interventions have been scheduled for the next few days on the streets affected by the river flooding to permanently remove sand and silt deposited on the roads.

In coordination with the Civil Protection, the underpasses of via Pompeo Leoni and via Arbe have already been freed from the water and the Amsa teams are completing the operations at the underpasses of viale Rubicone, piazza Carbonari and via Negrotto.

Around 130 thousand messages including emails (around 22.800), phone calls (over 58 thousand) and notifications via the Civil Protection app (around 47 thousand) between 16pm yesterday, the time the weather alert was issued, and 13pm today: these are the numbers of the free alert service of the Civil Protection of the Municipality of Milano which last night also warned in real time about the flooding of the Seveso.
