Vicenza: Giorno del Ricordo, cerimonia in memoria degli esuli istriani che trovarono rifugio nell'ex convento Cordellina

«We gather here today to pay homage to the memory of those who, on February 3, 1947, found a safe refuge here after having survived one of the most tragic pages of our history: the horror of the foibe and the Julian-Dalmatian exodus. – said the mayor Giacomo Possamai.

After the end of World War II, tens of thousands of Italians were forced to leave their lands, torn from their homes, deprived of their identity and forced to undertake a painful journey towards uncertainty. Among them were women and children, perhaps the most vulnerable in this tragedy, bearers of a silent but profound suffering.

This former convent, now Opera Pia Cordellina, was for many of them a first shelter, a place of welcome and relief after suffering. Vicenza, like other cities in Italy, knew how to lend a hand to those who had lost everything, demonstrating that humanity and solidarity are stronger than hatred and division.

Vicenza – and I'll close – is and will always be a city that remembers, a city that builds the future on the solid foundations of memory. It is our duty to keep it alive, so that there is no more room for hatred, discrimination, oblivion and indifference.».
