Verona: sexual assault on minor, fugitive arrested in Paraguay
The Verona Carabinieri are intensely and fruitfully committed to identifying and arresting individuals subject to Detention Orders and European Arrest Warrants, in execution of provisions issued by the Verona Public Prosecutor's Office.
And it is in this operational context of searching for fugitives at an international level that a 45-year-old Italian-Brazilian, wanted since September 2024, having been sentenced with a definitive sentence, was identified and captured in Paraguay, in the city of Ciudad del Este which falls within the territory of the so-called “Triple Frontera” (an area of three borders along the intersection between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay), a place where he had taken refuge in the hope of covering his tracks and escaping the execution of his sentence.
However, despite the distance and the precautions taken to avoid capture, the man was identified and arrested by Paraguayan police personnel, activated by the international cooperation service of the Ministry of the Interior following a report from the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Verona, who notified him of the Order for the execution of the sentence in prison issued by the Judicial Authority of Verona.
The 45-year-old, who previously lived in Verona, must serve a sentence of 5 years and 2 days in prison for the crime of sexual violence against a minor, committed in Verona in June/July 2016. The man was taken to the Paraguayan prisons where he will remain awaiting the decision on his handover to the Italian authorities, which may take place in the coming weeks.
