The explosion occurred during the night between 13th and 14th October in a farmhouse in Castel d'Azzano, in the Verona area, and cost the lives of three Carabinieri involved in an eviction operation.According to initial reports, the explosion occurred while the military was evacuating the building. Three Carabinieri officers lost their lives: Lieutenant Marco Piffari, Carabiniere Scelto Davide Bernardello and Chief Brigadier Valerio Daprà, who, along with special forces teams, were intervening to clear the building. In addition to the three victims, several members of the police force and firefighters were injured.

The president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella expressed his closeness and condolences to the Carabinieri:
«I learned with dismay and deep sorrow the news of the death of the three Carabinieri soldiers, overwhelmed by an explosion during a clearing operation in the province of Verona, in which other members of the police force and fire brigade were also injured. I express my solidarity with the Carabinieri and my deepest condolences to the families, along with my best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured workers."
The President of the Council Giorgia Meloni he expressed "Deep sorrow for the tragic death of three Carabinieri and the injury of thirteen others, including soldiers, firefighters and police." He extended his closeness “to the victims' families and to the Carabinieri” , also thanking “the healthcare personnel and all those who intervened promptly and professionally".
The Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto expressed his closeness to the families of the victims and to the Carabinieri:
“It is with immense sorrow that I learned this morning of the tragic death of three Carabinieri, killed on duty this morning in Castel d'Azzano (VR), hit by an explosion during a clearance operation. I wish to honor the memory of Lieutenant Special Charge Marco Piffari, Selected Carabiniere Davide Bernardello, and Brigadier Chief Special Qualification Valerio Daprà, who sacrificed their lives, fulfilling their duty to the very end in the service of the country. In this moment of profound sadness I express my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, to their loved ones and to the entire Carabinieri force."
Il President of the Veneto Region Zaia he expressed "Heartfelt condolences to the families of the three Carabinieri soldiers who died last night in the explosion of a farmhouse in Castel d'Azzano.“. He stressed that “these three deaths represent a deep wound for the Veneto and for Italy” and that “today is the moment of pain and respect” . The President also proclaimed three days of regional mourning, with the flags at half-mast in all institutional buildings, "as a sign of closeness to the families of the military and to the Carabinieri” .
Even the mayor of Verona Damiano Tommasi expressed the city's grief: “Verona is deeply affected by the tragic event and expresses her deepest sympathy to the families of the soldiers who lost their lives. We stand with the Carabinieri and the police forces who daily face increasingly unpredictable and dangerous social hardship.
even the Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida expressed his closeness: “I express Deepest condolences for the tragic death of the three Carabinieri officers who died in Castel d'Azzano. while they were carrying out an eviction.
