Trento in second place in urban sustainability: a model to follow

The city of Trento confirms its position of excellence in waste sorting, air quality and sustainable mobility, according to the Legambiente survey.

Trento ranks second in urban sustainability: a model to follow.

Trento is the second most sustainable city in Italy. In the thirty-first edition of the Legambiente survey published today in the Sole 24 Ore, the capital of Trentino is still on the podium together with Reggio Emilia, which this year takes first place, and Parma, third. Bolzano is ninth this year.

In the study on the environmental performance of 106 Italian provincial capitals, In recent years, Trento has continued to oscillate between first and second place, without ever moving away from the top positions in the rankings. Second this year, first in 2023, second in 2022, first in 2021, 2020 and 2019: the positive series proves that positive environmental indicators are not the result of chance, but the effect of very specific and long-term political choices.

So this year too Trento confirms its usual excellent performance in the key sectors of the study (air, water, waste, mobility, environment). For example, the data on air pollutants are good, water consumption is still decreasing and stands at 139 litres per capita per day (it was 147,4 last year, 149,7 two years ago and 151,3 litres three years ago).

The slight, but constant in recent years, decline in per capita waste production continues, from 446 in the last edition (it was 454 two years ago) to 426 Kg/ab/year. At the same time, separate waste collection improves by more than one percentage point: from 82,5% in the last edition it reaches 83,6%, a figure that confirms Trento among the best cities overall.

The progress made in the number of passengers transported by the local public transport service is also constant, from 136 trips per capita per year in the previous edition to 143 this year.

They still grow also the equivalent meters per 100 inhabitants of cycling infrastructure, which from 8,67 three years ago, to 8,92 two years ago and 8,95 last year, this year reaches over 9, stopping at 9,24 equivalent meters per 100 inhabitants of cycling infrastructure: this is still a figure far from the best cities overall in this index, but is constantly and slowly improving.

Trento finally It also improves in solar on public buildings where it reaches 15,12 kW per 1000 inhabitants of solar installed on public buildings (it was 14,81 last year), entering the top ten in this index.

There is no shortage of parameters to improve: for example, the rate of cars in circulation is still high while the index dedicated to the offer of local public transport services is decreasing, probably due to the reduction in trips linked to the lack of drivers.

There is also a worsening in the efficient use of land which drops from 7,5 out of 10 in the previous edition to 7/10: this data is explained with the construction stop during the pandemic period and with the post-Covid recovery during which some of the master plan's forecasts were implemented.
