Teramo: They pretend to be carabinieri on the phone to scam a woman with the spoofing technique.
A woman from Roseto degli Abruzzi reported to the Carabinieri of the local station that she had received a phone call from a bank official, who informed her that he had noticed suspicious movements from her current account to a foreign country and that she would subsequently be contacted by the Carabinieri of the Roseto degli Abruzzi station, who would have helped her to save her funds.
Indeed, after a few minutes, the woman received another phone call from so-called carabinieri, who, confirming what was previously reported by the fake Bank Official, began to ask her to carry out specific operations via her current account, asking her, in particular, to provide the codes with which he operated online through his current account.
Although the calling number corresponded to that of the Roseto Carabinieri Station, the woman, suspicious, ended the conversation and then called back the telephone number of the Command. On the other hand, the real Carabinieri informed her that no soldier had contacted her, inviting her not to comply with any type of request and to promptly go to the barracks to investigate the matter further and, therefore, file a complaint, since it was certainly an attempt of fraud.
“Spoofing” is a particular type of attack that allows a malicious attacker to hide his or her identity to appear “reliable” to the intended victim and thus gain access to confidential information and sensitive data. In the case in question, the criminals managed to make out the real telephone number of the Roseto degli Abruzzi Carabinieri station.
This is why we must increasingly pay attention to anyone who tries in some way to steal our data, in particular, those attributable to current accounts, credit cards and the like.
The Carabinieri reiterate that no one can lawfully ask for such information, especially by telephone, so it is important, if you have received a dubious phone call, to immediately contact 112 to report the incident.
