Taranto: thanks to the “Summer Safe 2024” project, controls on fish products continue. 300kg of black mussels and 100kg of mussels were seized.

It intensifies the control activity within the “Estate Sicura 2024” project, as also defined in the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety chaired in recent days by the Prefect of Taranto Paola Dessì.
The monitoring activity of the State Police has always been aimed - among others - at countering the widespread and dangerous phenomenon of the illegal sale of mussels, potentially harmful to human health.

The policemen of the Borgo police station, together with personnel from the ASL of Taranto, they checked, near the commercial port, a car driven by a 37 year old from Taranto, inside which they found approximately 200 kg of mussels without traceability and in poor condition.

The product was seized and subsequently destroyed by the company Kyma Ambiente.

Again, colleagues from the Borgo police station, assisted by ASL personnel, carried out a stakeout in the Parco delle Rimembranze area and proceeded to check two subjects intent on loading, onto a van, fish products coming from a boat moored on the quay overlooking the 1st inlet of the Mar Piccolo where the removal and movement of mussels is prohibited.

Once the loading was completed, the investigators decided to follow the van which headed into the local market in via Orsini, where the occupants of the vehicle unloaded the mussels using a trolley.

At this point the police intervened, following which the occupants of the van were identified and one of the two was also reported to the Judicial Authority because he was allegedly responsible for the crime of substances harmful to health and in a poor state of conservation.

All the product found, approximately 100 kg of black mussels were seized and entrusted to the Kyma company for subsequent destruction.

The checks continued in Via delle Fornaci, where inside a container there were two young people working on mussel processing. At the sight of the police, the aforementioned men made a hasty escape.

They were found inside the vehicle approximately 100 kg of mussels ready for sale, this product was also seized and subsequently destroyed.

The activities to combat the illegal sale of mussels will continue in the coming days in order to safeguard the health of consumers and promote the purchase of mussels from regularly authorized commercial establishments.

It is reiterated that the principle of presumption of innocence applies to those under investigation until the final sentence is reached.
