The State Police intervened around the 3.00 this morning near the Sailors' Monument, after the report of a young man sitting beyond the railing of the seafront, with his legs in the air and clear suicidal intentThe situation immediately appeared extremely delicate.

The agents of the Flying Squad, having quickly arrived on the scene, they identified the man – a 35 year old from Taranto – visibly shaking, frightened, and in the throes of strong emotional agitation.

A delicate mediation lasting 15 minutes

From the very first moments, the policemen adopted a cautious and reassuring approach, approaching cautiously and establishing a dialogue with the young man, with the sole aim of bringing him safely back inside the railing.

Mediation, duration 15 endless minutes, required patience, composure and great professionalism.

One of the officers managed to get in empathy with the young person, speaking to him calmly and building a relationship of trust.

At a key moment, the 35-year-old even offered him a cigarette to smoke together: an unexpected gesture that allowed us to lower the voltage just enough.

Taking advantage of that moment of relative relaxation, the other officers – who were standing a few meters away, ready to act – slowly approached the railing.

With a rapid, precise and coordinated maneuver, they managed to grab the young man by the arms, pulling him with force and finally saving him.

Emotional breakdown and the intervention of health workers

Only after he was safe did the 35-year-old realize the danger he had escaped and let himself go in a liberating cry, asking the police for help in dealing with the difficult personal situation that had led him to that extreme act.

The agents have it hugged and reassured, demonstrating once again the human and supportive aspect of their daily work.

Subsequently, the young man was entrusted to the health workers of the 118, who accompanied him to the emergency room for further tests and the necessary support.
