Vicenza: 87th Giro del Veneto, grand finale on October 16th with the climb to Monte Berico

They passed well 115 years since when, in 1909, the first Giro del Veneto was organized, the cycling classic par excellence that has returned to flourish in 2021 thanks to the organization of PP Sport Events. Compared to that first, historic, edition, one thing has not changed: the centrality of Vicenza also in this 87th Tour of Veneto, which will arrive in the city on 16 October after 178 km of show.

«As in 2023 – announces the mayor Giacomo Possamai -, the Giro del Veneto will decree its winner again in Monte Berico, in the past the arrival of a stage of the Giro d'Italia, after having seen the departure from Verona. Next year we will swap: the Giro del Veneto will start from Vicenza and arrive in the city of Verona, in a sporting twinning that becomes a vehicle to tell the story of the territory».

«Our city will once again be the protagonist of a great day of sport – declares the councilor Leone Zilio -. The race, which will see approximately 160 professional runners at the start, will be an opportunity for citizens and many enthusiasts to enjoy an important sporting moment in Vicenza, the ideal place for a grand finale of excellence».

On October 16th the race will take place away from Piazza Bra, a stone's throw from the Verona Arena, and then passing through Cologna Veneta, Lonigo, Monte del Roccolo, Vo' di Brendola and Valmarana, before entering the final circuit of Vicenza lungo 15 km, which through St. Augustine, Viale Fusinato and Viale X Giugno, will have as its cornerstone the Mount Berico, and it will go repeated five times (with six steps on the climb).

The distance to the sanctuary of the Madonna di Monte Berico measures exactly a kilometre with average slope of 7,1%. While the first 400 meters are quite rideable, the final 600 meters are more “nasty”, with slopes that constantly oscillate between 8 and 12%. The finish line will be halfway up the climb, so as to give sprinters as well as climbers a chance of victory.

Last year the Frenchman prevailed Dorian Godon, who anticipated the Norwegian in the explosive final of Monte Berico Tobias Halland Johannessen and the Belgian Florian Vermeersch.

«Seeing Monte Berico full of spectators in 2023 was a huge satisfaction – he explained Philip Pozzato, CEO of PP Sport Events -. We would like to transform this climb into something iconic for fans, a place where they can gather to cheer on the great cycling champions. This year we have added a circuit lap for this very reason, so as to attract even more people. From a technical point of view, however, the race is designed for different types of riders, both for attackers and those who go fast on climbs, and for those who are fast and can resist the climbs. I am sure that this year too we will have fun».
