Jannik Sinner triumphs at the 2024 US Open: second Slam and history of Italian tennis.
Jannik Sinner has claimed his second Grand Slam title by winning the 2024 US Open, consolidating his status as world number one and making history in Italian tennis. In his first final in the prestigious American tournament, Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. The match was dominated by the South Tyrolean from the start, with Fritz having few chances against Sinner's powerful shots and mental strength. After the victory, visibly moved, Sinner hugged his staff, including Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill, and dedicated the title to his sick aunt, underlining how difficult the last period has been due to extra-sporting events.
Sinner then spoke about the importance of the support from his team and family, stating how much this success means to him. During the award ceremony, hosted by André Agassi, Sinner expressed his gratitude to the crowd for the support he has received and reflected on his extraordinary tennis year. 2024 has been an incredible year for Sinner, with six wins in six finals, including the Australian Open title earlier in the year. With a record of 55 wins and only 5 losses in 2024, Sinner has also achieved victories at major tournaments such as Rotterdam, Miami, Halle and Cincinnati. His growth path, both mentally and physically, continues to demonstrate his consistency and determination to continue improving.
Sinner's US Open run was flawless. During the tournament, he conceded only two sets to his opponents, showing exceptional form. In the final, after a balanced start in the first set, Sinner took off, winning the set 6-3 thanks to a solid serve and a high percentage of points won on both first and second serves. In the second set, he held serve until the tenth game, when he capitalized on a crucial break point to close out the match 6-4. In the third set, Fritz tried to stay in the match, taking a 5-3 lead, but Sinner quickly responded by winning four consecutive games and sealing the match with a 7-5.
With this victory, Sinner became the first Italian tennis player to win the US Open for men and continued the tradition of champions under 23 years of age to dominate the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2024, together with Carlos Alcaraz, who won Paris and Wimbledon. This scenario had not occurred since 1974, when Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg won the four major titles. Fritz, although disappointed by the defeat, can console himself for having reached his first Slam final, providing moments of spectacular tennis during the tournament, beating notable players such as Ruud, Tiafoe and Zverev.
Sinner, with this victory in New York, strengthens his position as one of the rising stars of world tennis. His humble attitude, combined with constant work and iron determination, has made him a model of resilience and passion for tennis. This triumph is just another step on his path to a legendary career.
