Miami Open Men's Singles: Berrettini eliminated in the quarterfinals by Fritz.
Matteo Berrettini leaves with his head held high in the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters 1000. Defeated by the American Fritz after 2 hours and 44 minutes of play. The Italian, however, despite the defeat, has shown great tennis and seems to be able to compete with the best again.
Great performance by Berrettini, but it's not enough
Berrettini is back. Despite the bitterness of a defeat that hurts, the smile of someone who knows he gave his all remains on the face of the Italian. At the Miami Masters 1000, Matteo Berrettini stops in the quarter-finals, beaten by Taylor Fritz with the score of 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 after 2 hours and 44 minutes of high intensity tennis.
A challenge that highlighted the best Berrettini of recent years. The second set was the proof of a great match: down a set and forced to cancel six match points to his opponent, the Italian raised the level in the key moments, managing to snatch the tie-break and take the match to the third set.
In the deciding set, the battle was point for point until the 11th game, where Fritz found the decisive break, then closing the match on his service game. The American, number 4 in the world, thus flies to the semifinals where he will face Jakub Mensik, a Czech talent born in 2005. For Berrettini, however, the balance is positive. A year ago, at this time, he was playing the Phoenix Challenger to regain confidence. Now, at almost 29 years old, he is once again competitive against the best in the world.
In the other semi-final, on the other side of the scoreboard, it is Novak Djokovic to write yet another page of history. The Serbian overcomes sebastian korda in two sets 6-3, 7-6, and becomes the oldest semi-finalist in a Masters 1000 since 1990. It will be his eightieth semi-final in a tournament of this category and he will be faced by Dimitrov.
