Lombardy: 70 Lombard athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Best wishes from President Fontana.
Lombardy sets another record, that of the largest number of Italian athletes present at the Paris Olympics.
In fact there will be 70 – as reported on the Coni website – those born in Lombardy are ready to parade with the colours of the Italian national team at the Olympic Games which will officially begin on Friday. To them must be added a mini-patrol composed of 10 athletes born outside the regional borders but, in fact, grew up sportingly in Lombardy, first of all Marcel Jacobs from Desenzano.
The Lombard patrol is clearly the largest, followed by Lazio (43), Tuscany (38) and Veneto (32).
“I wish all our athletes and the rest of the Italian team a very big 'good luck' – comments the President of the Region, Attilio Fontana – sure that each of them will give their best to provide emotions and successes to make our medal collection as important as possible”.
A message from the governor shared by President of Coni Lombardia Marco Riva, who explains: "For Lombardy it is a source of pride to be able to count on such a large number of participants. I know their potential well and the professionalism with which they trained to arrive prepared for what is the most important event in the world of sport".
And in view of the start of the competitions, the governor announces that starting from the Paris Olympics, which will act as a bridge to the winter ones of Milano-Cortina 2026, the Region will give all Lombard athletes who take part in the Olympic Games a certificate of participation and thanks. The same procedure will also be carried out for Paralympic athletes.
“It was precisely with Marco Riva and his friend Franco Ascani, Italian member of the Culture Commission of the International Olympic Committee, that this idea was born – concludes President Fontana – which aims to be a further formal recognition for Lombard athletes. An initiative aimed at becoming a custom to be carried forward for each Olympics”.
