Cycling: the Sanremo Women took place on Saturday 22 March.

On Saturday, March 22, the Liguria Region hosted the Sanremo Women. The 'Classicissima', which had been missing in its women's version for twenty years, started in Genoa and ended in Sanremo after 160 km.

The return of women's cycling

The regional councillor for sport was present at the race, Simona Ferro, who brought greetings from the Liguria Region to the over 140 athletes of the Sanremo Women. 

“A women's race like this has been missing from Liguria for 20 years and we really wanted to bring it back in 2025, the year in which we are the European Region of Sport. The Sanremo Women is undoubtedly the result of great teamwork between the organizers, the Liguria Region and the municipalities involved. A race that takes place entirely on Ligurian territory and crosses three provinces, covering largely the same route as the men's race and succeeding in the dual mission of promoting women's cycling and our beautiful landscapes on the international scene”.

The acting mayor of Genoa was also present at the event Peter Piciocchi who stated: “Genoa told through the emotions of the first edition of Sanremo Women takes on a particular value. After 20 years, the entire pink charge of the best athletes in the world invaded the city starting from Piazza della Vittoria, to cross the flyover towards the Porto Antico, reaching Sestri Ponente and the Aurelia, giving beautiful images, all the enthusiasm of athletes and fans, in a festive and sharing atmosphere. A precious occasion with which sport unites history with the naturalistic beauties of Genoa and Liguria in front of many spectators, enthusiasts and families”.

The Sanremo Women marked the return of a great classic of women's cycling in Liguria. An edition that was able to combine sport, emotions and breathtaking landscapes, for the enthusiasm of all fans.
