Messina, discovery of the epigraph dedicated to Miguel De Cervantes on the 450th anniversary of his arrival in the city.
In the presence of the Councilor for Culture Enzo Caruso, the President of the Rotary Club “Sretto di Messina” Piero Federico and a representation of members of the Service Club, the epigraph dedicated to the presence of Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra, created by Rotary for the 450th anniversary of his arrival in Messina.
The text of the marble plaque, dictated by the historian Nino Principato, reports the period in which Cervantes remained hospitalized in the Great Hospital from 1 November 1571 to 24 April 1572, to treat his wounds sustained during the Naval Battle of Lepanto, fought on 7 October 1571, together with thousands of wounded from the Fleet of the Holy League which was welcomed in the port of Messina, from which it left in the first days of September of the same year.
“We are grateful to the meritorious commitment of the Rotary 'Strait of Messina' – declares the Councilor for Culture and Toponymy Enzo Caruso – for the contribution offered in the affixing of toponymic plaques, in agreement with the municipal administration, which restore the identities of characters and references to pages of city history to which streets and squares have been named over time, allowing a gradual recovery of the memory, erased by the tragic earthquake of 1908".
