Last weekend, a patrol from Tito's Canine Unit, while traveling along the Strada Statale 407 Basentana in the direction of Potenza, returning from another service, prevented a potential tragedy along that busy road.
At km 72, the military noticed a man in an evident state of agitation who attempted to throw himself under passing vehicles.
Aware of the imminent danger to the man and motorists, the Carabinieri intervened promptly, placing themselves between the subject and the flow of traffic.
Thanks to the promptness of the military and with the support of the on-duty radio of the Pisticci Carabinieri Company, which arrived on site in the meantime, the man was calmed down and identified. He was an 80-year-old from Puglia.
From the first reconstructions, It emerged that the elderly man was traveling as a passenger in a car driven by his brother-in-law, with his sister-in-law and brother also on board. During the trip, the man, in a sudden state of confusion, grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle, causing it to skid and forcing the driver to stop. Once the vehicle was stopped, the elderly man got out of the car and stood on the roadway, with the intention of getting hit.
The man was subsequently entrusted to the care of the healthcare personnel of the 118 Basilicata service, who promptly intervened on the scene.
The intervention of the Carabinieri Cinofili of Tito proved decisive, not only in saving the life of the elderly man, but also in prevent serious accidents that would have certainly involved other motorists with the imaginable, disastrous, consequences.
