Genzano di Lucania, they pretend to be Carabinieri to defraud an elderly woman: the two criminals arrested.

Last week, the Carabinieri of the Genzano di Lucania Station, in collaboration with those of the Palazzo San Gervasio Station and the Radiomobile Unit of the Venosa Company, have two men of Campanian origins arrested, aged 35 and 30, in flagrante delicto attempted aggravated fraud and resisting a public official.

The operation originated when a 90-year-old woman from Genzano di Lucania, a widow and pensioner, received a phone call from an unknown person. These, falsely describing themselves as Marshal of the Carabinieri, he asked for a sum of money in order to avoid alleged criminal consequences for his daughters. At the same time, a man who also identified himself as a Carabiniere showed up at the victim's home, he was trying to get the money back. The old woman, perceiving with great lucidity the evil intentions of the criminals, she reacted by screaming and scaring the young man away, who was surprised by the woman's reaction.

Following the telephone report made by the victim's daughter to the Commander of the Carabinieri Station of Genzano di Lucania, and with the coordination of the Operations Centre of the Venosa Company, it was possible to trace the criminalsThe two, on board a small car registered to a company based in the province of Naples, have attempted to escape but was stopped after a short chase, which in the meantime have been joined by patrols from the Palazzo San Gervasio Station and the Venosa Radiomobile, which ended on the SP 6 in the direction of Banzi, where they were blocked and arrested.

Once the formal procedures were completed, the two young men were then transferred to the Potenza District Prison, at the disposal of the competent Judicial Authority.

The GIP of the local Court then validated the arrests, ordering against them, for whom – it is specified – the presumption of innocence applies until a final sentence of conviction, the extent of pre-trial detention in prison.

The prompt response provided to the citizen and the success of the intervention are the result of continuous work by the Institutions through targeted information campaigns aimed at strengthening a collective awareness regarding these criminal phenomena to the detriment of the so-called weaker sections of the population as well as the incessant work of prevention and control on the territory carried out by the Carabinieri with its territorial line departments.

The heads of the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Potenza recommend resorting without hesitation to Single Emergency Number 112 or to the Carabinieri offices distributed throughout the territory certain of being welcomed by staff adequately trained for these needs too.
