A car crashed into a bus full of students, killing one person and injuring several others in the Pordenone area.

The accident that occurred in the early hours of the morning on regional road 464, just outside Maniago, has taken a heavy toll. Shortly after 7:00 a.m., a car and a public bus collided head-on, killing the driver of the Volkswagen Passat and injuring several passengers on the bus, including about fifteen students on their way to local schools.

A devastating impact

The basic details of the incident are already apparent: the driver, according to initial reports from the Carabinieri and local police, attempted to overtake a tractor traveling in the same direction. During the maneuver, he found himself facing an oncoming Atap bus, making a head-on collision inevitable. The particularly violent impact completely destroyed the front end of the car and caused the immediate death of the driver.

It cannot be ruled out that poor visibility, exacerbated by the low dawn sun, may have played a role in the tragedy. Investigators are currently evaluating this factor as they continue their investigations at the crash site.

Rescuers: Students slightly injured, driver trapped

About thirty students and commuters were on board the bus. Five or six students suffered minor injuries: all were transported to the Pordenone emergency room with code green status by Sores ambulances. Many of them, although not seriously injured, appeared to be in a state of shock.

The bus driver, who remained trapped in the twisted metal of the cabin, was in a more critical condition. Firefighters from Spilimbergo, supported by their colleagues from Pordenone and Maniago, worked for over two hours to safely extract him. The man remained conscious throughout the operation. Stabilized around 9:00 a.m., he was taken to the scene by ambulance and then transferred by helicopter to the hospital in Udine for further evaluation.

Road closures and investigations underway

The SR464 was immediately closed to traffic, with diversions set up to secondary roads in the area. The entire area remained patrolled throughout the morning by Carabinieri, local police, medical personnel, and firefighters, who were engaged in both rescue operations and securing the roadway.

The Spilimbergo Mobile Radio Unit and the Maniago station are now reconstructing every detail to determine the precise cause of the collision. In addition to the possible overtaking maneuver, the possibility of adverse environmental conditions, which may have affected the driver's visual perception, remains under investigation.

A shaken community

News of the accident spread quickly throughout the city and surrounding municipalities, where many of the students involved live. Families rushed to the Pordenone hospital, while local schools and governments closely monitored the situation.

The tragedy, which occurred during a busy school and work schedule, rekindles the issue of road safety along the SR464, a stretch already considered critical, especially during peak traffic hours.

Conclusions

As the Maniago community grapples with another road tragedy, investigations are continuing to determine the culprits and contributing factors behind the violent crash. There was nothing that could be done for the driver. The injured young people are receiving all the necessary treatment, while the bus driver remains under close observation at the Udine hospital.

The next few hours will be crucial to understanding the exact dynamics of a collision that, due to a few moments of maneuvering and perhaps one flash of lightning, transformed a normal school trip into a collective drama.
