Zelensky in Italy: “Grateful for the support, together we can achieve a just peace”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has undertaken an official visit to Italy, during which he met with the highest authorities of the state. An intense day that began at the Ramstein base in Germany and continued in Rome with high-level talks. The goal: to consolidate Italian support for the Ukrainian cause and discuss strategies for a lasting peace.

The meeting with President Mattarella

At the Quirinale Palace, Sergio Mattarella reiterated Italy's commitment to fully support Ukraine against Russian aggression. "We do this for the friendship that binds Ukraine and Italy, for the respect of international rules and for the security of the whole of Europe," Mattarella said. Zelensky expressed deep gratitude for this position, inviting the Italian President to visit Kiev. A symbolic invitation, considering that the last trip of an Italian president to Ukraine dates back to 25 years ago.

Among the topics discussed were military and humanitarian support, the future of Ukrainian integration into the EU and NATO, and Italy's role in the reconstruction of the country. On this last point, a conference for the reconstruction of Ukraine has already been scheduled in Rome on 10 and 11 July, a sign of Italy's commitment to the recovery of the country devastated by the conflict.

The bilateral with Giorgia Meloni

The meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took place at Palazzo Chigi. Meloni reassured Zelensky of Italy's all-round support: "We have never been undecided about which side to take. We will continue to support Ukraine in every way possible to ensure a just peace." Zelensky, in turn, praised the special relationship established with the Prime Minister, underlining the trust placed in her also in view of a possible dialogue with Donald Trump.

Cooperation between Italy and Ukraine also extends to the economic level. Zelensky encouraged Italian investments, especially in the technological sector and in the production of drones, essential for Ukrainian defense. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of European autonomy: “The EU must be stronger and more independent. United with the United States, we can face any challenge”.

The international context and future challenges

Zelensky expressed concern about global political uncertainty, particularly a possible change of administration in the United States. “We have built a global coalition to defend freedom, but the future is uncertain,” he said, referring to the risk that American support for Ukraine could wane under a new leadership. However, he hoped that the next American administration would continue to balance diplomacy and deterrence against Russia.

The Ukrainian president stressed the importance of security guarantees for his country before starting peace negotiations. “A lasting peace cannot be a surrender. It is essential to force Russia to respect the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Concrete commitments and hopes

Zelensky called the meetings in Italy “excellent” and praised the commitment of Western allies to provide military support. The United States recently announced a new $500 million aid package, while the United Kingdom will contribute 30.000 drones by 2025. The EU also confirmed a €3 billion loan to strengthen Ukraine’s financial capacity.

The Ukrainian president concluded his visit with an interview with Rainews24, during which he thanked Italy for the tenth aid package and renewed his appeal to the international community: "We need constant pressure on Russia to end the war and ensure a future of peace and stability for Ukraine and Europe."

Zelensky's visit to Italy marks an important step in building a united and determined international coalition to support Ukraine. With the support of Italy and its allies, Kiev aims to achieve a just peace, while strengthening the foundations for future reconstruction and deeper integration into the European Union and NATO.
