World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos: A Global Dialogue on Economics, Geopolitics and Climate

The 2025 edition of the World Cup kicks off today in Davos, Switzerland. World Economic Forum (WEF), which will continue until January 24. The 55th edition of the forum brings together over 3.000 participants, including political, business and academic leaders from all over the world, for discuss major global challenges, from the climate crisis to artificial intelligence.

Among the most anticipated protagonists of the event, Donald Trump, who will speak via video January 23, and Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, present in Davos to discuss the geopolitical crisis and its economic implications. They will also be present representatives of the European institutions, such as Ursula von der Leyen, and numerous heads of state and government, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The issues at the centre of the debate

The 2025 edition of the is titled "Collaboration in the Age of Intelligence" and will see global leaders confront crucial issues:

  • Climate crisis: A priority theme, with a focus on the need for international collaboration to combat global warming.
  • Geopolitical tensions: The war in Ukraine and the role of Russia and China on the world stage continue to influence global dynamics.
  • Economic protectionism: The impact of restrictive trade policies will be discussed, focusing on tensions between the US, Europe and China.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Technology: The WEF will explore the potential of AI for economic growth and the ethical challenges that arise, including social media regulation and concerns about online privacy.

Oxfam Report: Growing Inequality

On the sidelines of the opening of the Forum, Oxfam International published a report denouncing a record increase in economic inequality. In 2024, billionaire wealth grew three times faster than the previous year, with the emergence of a new class of “trillionaires” expected in the next decade.

The report also highlighted how the number of people living in poverty has remained virtually unchanged over the past three decades. Oxfam's report adds to the alarm raised by outgoing US President Joe Biden about the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few.

Italian presence 

Italy will be represented by Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, and from several companies that will participate for explore emerging economic opportunities. Despite its modest participation, Italy aims to play a strategic role in the issues of sustainability and technological innovation.
