The examination of Italy in the context of the fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) took place in Geneva at the Palais des Nations. During the interactive session, 123 States presented recommendations and observations to assess the human rights situation in the country. The Italian delegation, led by Undersecretary Giorgio Silli, has reaffirmed Italy's commitment to the promotion and protection of fundamental rights.
It took place yesterday at the Palace of Nations in Geneva the fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) dedicated to Italy. This is a mechanism of “peer review” established within the Human Rights Council, which all UN member states submit, approximately every five years, for a examination of the overall human rights situation within it.
In the session, in the form of an interactive debate, 123 states intervened to submit a series of recommendations and observations, which will be carefully examined by Italy through a coordination exercise led by the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU) – a structure established at the Farnesina.
The Italian delegation was led by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs George Silli and included representatives of nine Ministries, departments of the Presidency of the Council, UNAR (National Office against Racial Discrimination), CNEL, AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation), Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, the President of the Extraordinary Commission for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights of the Senate, Senator Stefania Pucciarelli and the Hon. Emanuele Loperfido, Vice President of the Permanent Committee on Human Rights in the World of the Chamber of Deputies.
"Italy strongly supports the UPR mechanism, in line with its traditional commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights." Silli highlighted "Italy intends to contribute with its efforts to keep the human being, with his rights and fundamental freedoms, at the centre of the action of the international community" continued the Undersecretary, who also recalled the Italy's candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026-28 mandate.
