The words of the Senator for life, Liliana Segre, on manifestations of anti-Semitism
During the extraordinary commission on intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, incitement to hatred and violence, Senator Liliana Segre dedicated a few words to the current context.
Senator for life, Liliana Segre, declared, during the Extraordinary Commission on intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, incitement to hatred and violence: “In Italy and Europe there have been manifestations of anti-Semitism which require decisive action from the relevant institutions and a convergent commitment from all political forces”. “This meeting is the consequence of the terrible events that have taken place and are taking place in the Middle East this month. We must stop the spiral of hatred and free all the hostages, but also protect civilians and put an end to all forms of violence.", added the senator for life.
“With 1989 we thought the century of totalitarianism, racist hatred and genocidal violence ended. These thirty years and more have shown us that we were wrong, that racial, anti-Semitic hatred, violence against other faiths and populations, continues to claim victims in enormous quantities and, as far as girls and boys are concerned, even unbearable, intolerable. Yet what is happening today in Europe and the Middle East is not only the culmination of a long series of deaths, but also of global problems that have always remained unsolved.", goes on to explain his intentions, “However, I want to try to preserve the best of the expectations raised by the end of the 'short century'. I want to continue to cultivate hope, trust, I would say utopia. The utopia of a world that repudiates war and terrorism, that repudiates anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and every type of racism, every discrimination, that counteracts the rampant hatred in the streets, but also on social media and in the online universe , with the culture of peace, discussion, respect and solidarity. I wonder, utopia? Yes, utopia. Of those who believe that violence is not the antidote to violence, but generates more violence, ad infinitum."
