Cernobbio Forum: Meloni between support for Ukraine and economic challenges.

Italy's role in supporting Ukraine and economic prospects according to Meloni

At the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, on Lake Como, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s support for Ukraine during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Meloni reiterated that support for Ukraine remains at the heart of the Italian G7 Presidency agenda, stressing Italy’s commitment to Ukraine’s legitimate defense and a just and lasting peace. During the meeting, Zelensky appreciated Italy’s support and discussed plans for Ukraine’s reconstruction, also in view of the Ukraine Recovery Conference to be held in Italy in 2025.

On the economic front, Meloni spoke about the difficulties of the Italian economic scenario and the need for careful management of available resources. She declared the end of the “season of bonuses and money thrown out the window,” emphasizing that “the resources are not many but how they are used makes a difference.” Among the government’s priorities for the next budget maneuver, she cited wages, birth rates and support for companies that hire, highlighting the improvement of stable contracts and the reduction of precarious employment.

Meloni also addressed the issue of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), defending the work done by Minister Raffaele Fitto and reiterating her confidence in the future of the plan. She assured that the PNRR is in good hands and will continue to be so in the years to come, since the entire "country system" is working well, especially now that we are approaching the crucial phase of implementing projects and the first tangible results.

During the forum, EU High Representative Josep Borrell praised Meloni's clear position, but also took a swipe at the use of weapons supplied by Italy to Ukraine to strike Russian bases in Russia. Zelensky responded indirectly to these remarks, stressing that "there are no problems in relations with Italy."

On the topic of energy transition and Industry 5.0, Meloni reiterated the Italian government's commitment to reviewing the energy plan without giving up the decarbonization objectives, gaining consensus among the entrepreneurs present. In the background, the open dialogue with the European Union remains, especially in view of the upcoming appointments of the commissioners, with Italy aiming at a weighty economic delegation, represented by Minister Raffaele Fitto.

Meloni's speech at the Ambrosetti Forum highlighted the Italian government's strategy for supporting Ukraine, managing economic resources and addressing future challenges in the energy and industrial sectors, strengthening Italy's position both domestically and internationally.
