Statistical analysis of the demand for seasonal work in the Veneto tourism sector
Councilor Mantovan: "66 thousand seasonal workers employed in the main tourist areas of the region, 50% of whom are under 35".
Statistical analysis of the demand for seasonal work in the Veneto tourism sector
“In Veneto, the labor market in the tourism sector continues to be characterized by a high use of seasonal work, with a need for personnel concentrated in certain periods of the year. A need, however, that risks being disappointed more and more often. The workers hired in 2023 with fixed-term contracts in the main tourist areas of Veneto were a total of 66 thousand, most of whom were concentrated on the Veneto coast (23 thousand), in the art cities of Padua, Treviso, Venice, Verona and Vicenza (22 thousand), and on Lake Garda (13 thousand)”.
The Labour Councillor highlights this Valeria Mantovan commenting on the statistical analysis of the Veneto Lavoro Observatory “Truffles/60“, dedicated to the demand for seasonal work in the tourist areas of Veneto and published in the dedicated section, visible clicking here.
The study shows that the 50% approximately of workers involved in a seasonal employment relationship in the tourism sector appear to have under the age of 35, especially in the area of Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene and the Asiago Plateau, While the Euganean spas They are distinguished by a relatively greater weight of workers over 55 (The 18% against the11% of the total areas considered).
Approximately half of the workers are classified as waiters (28,9%) or unqualified personnel, such as cleaners, porters and custodians (21,6%), but also in this case with some significant territorial specificities. In the Prosecco Hills, for example, there are frequent hirings of bartenders, restaurant workers and cooks, in the cities of art there is also a high demand for wellness and entertainment professionals, while in the Euganean Spa area there is an increase in the demand for masseurs, lifeguards and qualified personnel.
Foreigners represent the 30% of the total, but their distribution in the various tourist areas is quite uneven and ranges from 16% of the Asiago Plateau to 34% of the cities of art.
Other interesting data concern the origin of workers: if he 40,7% of workers with fixed-term contracts resides in the same municipality where he works, in the last ten years the share of workers arriving from long distances, even more than 50 km from the workplace, has also increased. In particular, from nearby municipalities, i.e. located at a distance less than 20 km, comes the 18,3% of workers, a further share comes from the municipalities between 20 and 50 km (13,8%), and the 23,7% instead comes from municipalities located at a distance greater than 50 km. Added to these is a 3,5% of foreign workers arrived from abroad.
The greatest difficulties in finding seasonal workers in the immediate vicinity are encountered above all for the structures in the Dolomites area, the Veneto coast and Lake Garda, who increasingly resort to workers coming from long distances, while in terms of professional profile the most sought after outside the relevant catchment area are above all chefs, qualified staff and wellness and entertainment professionals.
“Once again the statistical analyses carried out by Veneto Lavoro – underlines the regional councillor Valeria Mantovan – allow us to obtain a detailed picture of the situation in order to precisely orient regional policies on work. The in-depth study “Tartufi/60″ shows how in a region with a strong tourist vocation such as Veneto, the demand for seasonal work is very high and not fully satisfied. It is therefore important to focus on professional training to guarantee companies highly specialized human capital and students the possibility of quickly becoming part of the Veneto production system. This is also why for years the Veneto region has focused on ITS, Higher Technological Institutes, which through an offer composed of 50 percent teaching activities and the remaining 50 percent internships in companies in the sector, allow graduates to find work in an area consistent with the completed path”.
