Security Package: what does the new bill approved by the Council of Ministers provide

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed herself as "proud" of the measures of the Security Package, approved by the Council of Ministers. Interior Minister Piantedosi explained the points on which the interventions will focus.

The bill approved by the Council of Ministers provides for contractual renewals of divided staff and a package of updated rules. The topics addressed vary from scams targeting the elderly to riots in the CPR, from pickpocketing to attacks on the police and includes an expansion of the guarantees aimed at intelligence involved in counter-terrorism.

The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, explained some ratios foreseen in the “Safety package”.

One of the objectives is to intervene in the cases of “pickpockets” on public transport or in stations.  "The phenomenon of using the condition of maternity as an exemption in the event of the commission of a crime", Piantedosi said.

There is also a provision that punishes anyone who induces a minor under 16 to beg. Furthermore, a new crime has been introduced which punishes those who organize or participate in a riot in a prison with acts of violence, threats or other dangerous conduct. Anyone who promotes or directs a revolt within a reception center for migrants is also punishable.

There was no shortage of criticism, Francesco Boccia, a member of the Democratic Party, expressed his opinion on the new bill, stating that “The only instinct they have is security, to increase penalties and scare the country”, While the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni she was proud of the measurements “Without security there is no freedom, there is no social protection, there is no economic growth”, declared the Prime Minister.
