PNRR, new restoration sites of the Capitoline superintendency begin

New restoration sites for the historical-artistic heritage of the Capital have been started, curated by the Capitoline Superintendency within the Caput Mundi intervention program, which are added to the first two opened last month on the fountains of Piazza Farnese and Piazza della Rotonda.

The works will affect the three fountains in Piazza Navona, the statues of Ponte Sant'Angelo, the fountain of the Tritons in Piazza Bocca della Verità, the fountain in Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterano and the fountain in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, symbolic places of the city and of great importance for the Jubilee routes. The monuments will be subjected to restoration, conservation and enhancement interventions, under the technical direction of the Superintendence, for a total amount of almost 3 million euros.

For the fountains of Piazza Navona – the Moro fountain, the Four Rivers fountain, the Neptune fountain – the works will involve the stone surfaces, the inside of the tanks, the paving of the buffer area, the metal fences, allowing the full legibility of the monuments to be restored.

The restoration of the Ponte Sant'Angelo statues involves interventions of disinfection of all surfaces, removal of deposits and encrustations, replacement of unsuitable grouting, verification of assemblies and any reassembly of fragments.

The fountain of the Tritons in Piazza Bocca della Verità will be subjected to restoration of stone and stucco surfaces, waterproofing of tanks and consolidation of screeds. The water system and artistic lighting will also be overhauled to enhance the architectural and sculptural elements.

Finally, for the fountain in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano and that in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, various interventions are planned, such as the cleaning of stone surfaces, disinfection and weeding, restoration or replacement of metal elements, restoration of the functionality of technological systems and restoration of the waterproofing of tanks.

The implementation timing of the interventions falls within the first milestone of the Caput Mundi program scheduled for December 2024.
