Participation of Undersecretary Silli in the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and neighboring countries
The Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Silli, spoke in Paris at International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and neighboring countries, organized by France, Germany and the European Union in Paris on 15 April, exactly one year after the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan.
Undersecretary Silli expressed the profound Italy's solidarity with the Sudanese population, condemning the growing ethnic-based violence and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law a damage to the civilian population by both parties to the conflict. Silli therefore expressed great apprehension about the internal and regional consequences of the Sudanese crisis which, with over six million displaced people and one and a half million refugees in neighboring countries, now represents the largest humanitarian crisis in terms of number of displaced people in the world.
“Italy renews its appeal to all actors involved in the Sudanese conflict to immediately put an end to armed clashes, to protect civilians and to refrain from attacks on civilian infrastructure” said Silli, underlining how a negotiated solution is urgently needed. “Italy supports and encourages any mediation effort – by the UN, the African Union and other international and regional actors – to achieve the cessation of hostilities and the resumption of an inclusive political dialogue with a view to the restoration of the institutions civilians in Sudan" concluded the Undersecretary.
