Modena, the new Amendola park: trees, light and paths curated by the Leonardi Archive
Councilor Filippi: "In continuity with the original choices to meet today's needs"
Modena, more trees, more light and new routes. These are the main themes of the project for the organic restoration and enhancement of the Amendola park which aims to increase and densify the greenery, renew the lighting and restore the concrete paths while also creating new ones. The project aims to make the park created in 1981 based on a design by architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi more usable and enjoyable for all citizens, maintaining its original layout.
To guide the transformation of the area, which over time has shown the need for a restoration intervention, respecting the cultural heritage of the architects Leonardi and Stagi, the Municipality of Modena has entrusted the feasibility study of the project to the Leonardi Archive, taking the occasion of the park's fortieth birthday. The architects' work started from the investigation of the state of affairs with the survey and mapping of all the existing trees and plants and their health conditions. In the same way, all the paths and original concrete artefacts were investigated (seat cylinders, fountains, dustbins), a material chosen at the time as the dominant construction element in the park, and an in-depth analysis was carried out on the lighting, foreseeing the restoration of the light tower. At the same time, a citizen listening initiative was launched to collect information on park use habits, observations, preferences and suggestions through an online questionnaire to which 1.772 citizens responded.
The project for the restoration of the Amendola park was presented this morning, Tuesday 26 October, at OvestLab with a press conference attended by the Environment Councilor Alessandra Filippi and the architects Andrea Cavani and Giulio Orsini who oversaw the project for the Leonardi Archive.
“Having identified the need to intervene on the park which clearly shows the signs of aging – explains the Councilor for the Environment Alessandra Filippi – we decided to maintain continuity with the design idea of Leonardi and Stagi, based on the centrality of trees and greenery but grafted onto the political and cultural tradition of the city. This means that the park is and will be designed even more for people and for current needs. For this reason, before leaving, we wanted to listen to those who frequent it and love it, and the response, in fact, was exceptional".
The restoration project of the Amendola park, adds architect Giulio Orsini, “is a fundamental opportunity to resume and update the Leonardi-Stagi project aimed at the construction of a large green infrastructure at the service of the community, and to promote tourist-cultural events and itineraries that have trees and the relationship between city and nature at their centre."
The implementation of the project, which has an estimated total value of over 2 and a half million euros, will proceed in stages, starting in 2022 with the lighting interventions. Furthermore, the project will be the reference framework within which all ordinary and extraordinary maintenance interventions of the park will be included.
