Milano, Palazzo Marino. “Women and Health” launches the traveling initiative to promote a gender-sensitive approach to healthcare.

Spread awareness, contribute to the affirmation of a real culture of health and promote the contribution of women in the field of healthcare and scientific information. With this objective, on 22 April, in the Alessi Hall of Palazzo Marino, on the occasion of the National Women's Health Day established by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in 2015, the first initiative of “Healthy Women“, a project promoted by the Italian Healthy Cities Network OMS and the Municipality of Milano.

During the morning, experts, doctors and healthcare professionals met in two different moments of discussion.
During the first round table, entitled "Informed and aware, for your health“, attention was paid to the protection of women's health: from the promotion of healthy behaviors to prevention, from access to care in the area to raising awareness of the importance of this aspect at every age of life, with the aim of promoting a gender-oriented approach that has its roots in different biological characteristics , but also on environmental, socio-relational, economic and cultural factors.

Correct and adequate information is fundamental for health, also and above all in moments of physiological change that characterize the different phases of a woman's life: childbearing age, pregnancy, menopause.

"Italy is among the last in Europe for the use of contraception, especially hormonal contraception - clarifies Franca Fruzzetti, past president of the Italian Contraception Society -. We estimate that only between 14 and 20% of women of reproductive age use it. The lack of information regarding the importance of protecting oneself from unwanted pregnancies represents one of the main factors underlying this situation".

Furthermore, in Italy, an estimated ten million women are at the age of menopause, a moment that arrives at the height of social, working and family life. According to a survey by the Onda Foundation, only 50% of menopausal women with symptoms resort to remedies to limit the unpleasant effects, with a strong conditioning due to cultural and information barriers.

"Menopause – adds Filippo Murina, vice president of the Italian Menopause Society – it is not a disease, but a physiological condition that can be associated with disorders and consequences relevant to a woman's health and quality of life. Today we have numerous effective and safe treatment approaches available, which must be personalized so that their potential can be exploited to the fullest".

The second round table of the day, promoted by GWPR Italia, will be dedicated to "The strategic role of communication for women's health empowerment". The weight and role of women in the management of family care and health have always been very great, just as, over the years, their presence within institutions and companies has become increasingly massive. In the same way, this presence and this role must be strengthened from a communication point of view so that their irreplaceable contribution within the country system is equally valued.

"Health - explains Carola Salvato, president of GWPR Italia – today it is a challenge for institutions, doctors, diagnosis and treatment paths and healthcare facilities. Communicating transparently, transmitting trust and values, sharing validated information are among the key ingredients: a lever to promote positive effects on the health system and to contain public spending. Finally, women, who have always been spokespersons for family health, users and professionals, are a resource to be enhanced for the country's health system and in which to invest".

Milano Since 2023, he has been president of the WHO Healthy Cities Network, promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Health Agency, with the aim of helping cities to spread awareness about public health, to develop local health policies and health programmes, to prevent and overcome threats and risks, to anticipate future challenges. In Italy the Network represents more than 11 million citizens and the objective of 'Women in Health' is the diffusion, in the coming months, of traveling events of information, participation and involvement of citizens in all participating cities.
