Giovanni Toti has resigned as governor of Liguria. The news was confirmed by the Liguria Region and the letter of "irrevocable resignation" was delivered to the protocol office by councilor Giacomo Giampedrone on behalf of Toti. Giampedrone explained that the regional elections will be held within 90 days, as required by the regional statute.

According to article 126 of the Constitution, Toti's resignation automatically entails that of the Regional Council and the early dissolution of the Regional Council. In the transitional period, until the installation of the new Council and the new Executive, the acting president Alessandro Piana and the administration will enter into a prorogatio regime, guaranteeing administrative continuity for ordinary administrative activities or urgent and non-deferrable acts.

The League has denounced what it believes is an attempt to subvert the popular vote through investigations and arrests. In a statement, the party expressed solidarity with Toti and confidence in the reconfirmation of the centre-right.

Giovanni Donzelli of Fratelli d'Italia thanked Toti for the work done, underlining the progress of the Region under his administration and accusing the left of wanting to exploit the investigations to return to power.

Carlo Calenda, leader of Action, criticized the ways in which Toti's resignation was forced, calling them unworthy of a rule of law. Calenda also underlined that the use of investigations as a basis for political confrontation represents a negative page for Italian democracy.

Despite the difficult situation, Giampedrone confirmed the inauguration of the Via dell'Amore, a significant project strongly supported by Toti. The interim president Alessandro Piana thanked Toti for his contribution to the region and assured that the administration will continue to work for the good of Liguria until the elections.
