Infrastructural, economic and social development: 6,8 billion for Sicily. Agreement signed between national government and Region

1,3 billion are earmarked for the construction of the Messina Strait Bridge.

Sicily will be able to count on 6,8 billion euros to carry out infrastructural, economic and social development of the territory in the coming years. It is the result of the agreement for the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC) 2021-2027 between the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Presidency of the Sicilian Region signed on the afternoon of May 27 at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, in the presence of the mayors of the entire island and civil, religious and military authorities.

The agreement guarantees with 5,5 billion financial coverage for 580 interventions in nine different areas and a further 1,3 billion regional co-financing for the project to build the Messina Strait Bridge, placing Sicily in first place among the regions for resources assigned.

In detail, the largest part of the sums, 2,5 billion is intended for "Environment and natural resources": to the 800 million expected for the construction of the waste-to-energy plants are added, among others, financing for water resources (527 million), waste (164 million), purification (354 million), interventions to combat hydrogeological instability and coastal erosion ( approximately 700 million).

1 billion euros has been allocated to the "Transport and mobility" area, of which 710 million will be used for road maintenance and new road infrastructure. 548 million go to “Business competitiveness”; to “Social and health” 392 million, of which 271 million include investments in healthcare facilities and equipment; to “Urban redevelopment” 100 million; to “Culture” 182 million.

For "Education and training" 80 million are expected; for the “Energy” sector 67,5 million; finally, 89 million will go to the "Administrative capacity-technical assistance" action line.

Furthermore, 331,9 million of Fsc 2021-2027 resources are earmarked for co-financing the European Programs of the Sicilian Region.

Added to these funds are 234 million euros in FSC advances.

The Sicilian Region in defining the programming regarding the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund has benefited from the support of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
