Relations between Italy and Tunisia are at the centre of a series of institutional meetings that have taken place in recent days. The President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa, met the president of the Assembly of Representatives of the Tunisian People, Ibrahim Bouderbala, at the Bardo Palace, and the President of the Tunisian Republic, Kais Saied, at the Palace of Carthage.

The dialogue between the parliaments of Italy and Tunisia

The meeting between La Russa and Bouderbala highlighted “the illustrious relations between the two countries, based on historical and geographical ties, which have fostered close cooperation in various fields”, according to an official statement by the Tunisian Parliament. The two presidents stressed the importance of increase visits between parliamentarians and share experiences and skills to further strengthen institutional relations.

Among the topics discussed was the management of irregular migration. Both sides recognized the need for bilateral and multilateral action to address the phenomenon, with a focus on the security and stability of the entire Mediterranean area.

La Russa: “Solid relations between Italy and Tunisia”

In the subsequent meeting at the Palace of Carthage, Ignazio La Russa brought the greetings of the Italian people and the senators of the Republic to President Kais Saied.I am proud of the level of relations between our two countries, which will grow and continue in the same common direction.”, declared La Russa, reiterating theItalian commitment to economic cooperation and the fight against human trafficking.

During the meeting, President Saied highlighted how Tunisia has “endured a lot” in the fight against human trafficking, calling on Northern countries to step up their efforts to protect victims and ensure they live a dignified life.

Economic cooperation and bilateral agreements

Among the key points discussed, the economic cooperation and the ssupport for Tunisian communities in Italy. Saied expressed satisfaction with the recent agreement on mutual recognition of driving licenses, which he considered an important step towards a deeper and more concrete dialogue between the two countries.

Commemorations and culture

La Russa's visit to Tunisia will end with his participation in the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the death of Bettino Craxi in Hammamet, together with Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. The two representatives will also inaugurate the exhibition "Volti del Novecento" at the Dar Sebastien Cultural Institute, underlining the value of cultural cooperation as a tool to strengthen ties between Italy and Tunisia.

A partnership for regional stability

Tunisia has expressed its opposition to becoming a transit point for illicit activities related to human trafficking, stressing the need for joint actions to dismantle criminal networks operating in the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa. Cooperation on this front represents a strategic priority for both countries, which aim to ensure regional stability in the interests of their respective populations.

By consolidating historical relations and addressing common challenges together, Italy and Tunisia confirm their strategic partners for the security and development of the Mediterranean.
