Arezzo, PNRR: 19 million euros in 21 projects to put urban and social impact at the service of quality of life

Redevelopment, sustainable mobility, respect for the environment, mending the city fabric

Arezzo, planned the use of funds granted by the Government within the PNRR. 19 million euros go to the city, which the Municipality wants to use in 21 projects to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

“This administration sends a great message to the city: redevelopment, enhancement of the building heritage, mobility, sustainable and therefore respect for the environment, urban reconnection. And resources: an injection that is not only economic but above all of trust, corresponding to 19 million euros which reward our participation in the Ministry of the Interior's tender for the redevelopment of urban areas and existing public building structures, sustainable mobility, urban decor, social fabric. We are always encouraged by the desire to achieve the objectives that we have set for ourselves in the mandate program according to an organic plan that has as its point of reference the quality of the places where the life of our fellow citizens takes place on a daily basis".

Thus the mayor Alessandro Ghinelli announces with satisfaction, together with the councilor for public works Alessandro Casi, the result obtained by the Municipality of Arezzo in the context of the aforementioned tender, the official announcement of which arrived last December 31st. Born before and independently, in May 2021, of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, it was then financed with part of the Pnrr funds.

Alessandro Casi goes into detail: “we gave substance to participation in the ministerial tender by preparing 21 projects that run along two tracks: sustainable mobility and urban regeneration. The framework in which we have inserted them is the mending of the city fabric. The example I will immediately give is the public space that will arise between the former Bastanzetti and the Montefalco area: the latter must be experienced and perceived no longer as a part far from the center but as substantially integral, or at least complementary, to the same . It is clear that operations of this kind have clear social repercussions, because in public spaces people live, meet and recognize each other. And this, now more than ever, after the forced distance that we unfortunately know, is very important. The entire project process is already underway, there are three communicated time steps: 30 September 2023 final awarding of contracts, 31 March 2024 works 30% completed, 31 March 2026 end of works. Obtaining these resources was a felt and desired objective, we did not find ourselves unprepared by inserting all the works since June in the three-year public works plan, divided by year. We hope to be able to proceed quickly and we can't wait to open the construction sites."

But what are the works the councilor is talking about? The first track is represented by the so-called sustainable mobility with over seven new kilometers of cycle paths which will partly represent a connection to existing routes, such as in via Alfieri, via Romana, from via Benedetto Croce to the hospital or between via Marco Perennio and the Ducci park , partly new "cyclable roads" in places that are not obvious: the entire north-west axis of the urban ring road will be affected with new paths between multiplexes and large shopping centers up to the Caselle district; we also include the cycle/pedestrian crossing of the roundabout of the multiplex cinema and the cycle path from the Setteponti shopping center to Ceciliano.

There are ten urban regeneration projects: the first one mentioned by the councilor and corresponds to the transformation into a square of the current unused green area in front of via del Rossellino and which will become the link between via Petrarca and the Montefalco-Baldaccio area, with an even more ambitious idea, namely an underpass to avoid a delicate road crossing. There are two projects for San Clemente which will lead to the demolition of the basketball arena, which will be rebuilt outside the walls - the same fate for the Fiorentina social aggregation center destined for a new headquarters - and to the redevelopment of the sports area with green area, parking and roads ; two projects at the former Cadorna barracks will concern the roofing, facades and internal environments of the Elle-shaped building which now houses the schools; the Ball Game will become a sort of "access to the east" as in addition to the renovation of the green area and a portion of the walls there will be a connection with the part of the city above; adaptation to fire prevention regulations is expected for the library; the face and function of Piazza Saione completely change: coming from via Trasimeno you will no longer pass in front of the church but approaching the left turn into via Guelfa you will be directed towards via Vittorio Veneto. And again: the redevelopment of Piazza Giotto to reiterate its peculiar modernity and that of the roads and car parks serving the future creative vegetable garden.
