Alessandria, the Meier bridge turns yellow for "March Donna 2021"
March is Endometriosis Awareness Month
Alessandria, As part of the "March Donna 2021" initiatives, on Saturday 27 March the Meier bridge will be lit up in yellow, welcoming the proposal of Team Italy of the WorldWide Endomarch, to raise public awareness of the problems relating to endometriosis.
“It is a typically female disease – comments the councilor for Equal Opportunities, Cinzia Lumiera -, widespread in 10 percent of women of childbearing age, but it is still little known today. As a woman, I am aware of this and understand its potential seriousness, but I see little talk about it. It was brought to our attention by Valeria Piccolo, herself suffering from endometriosis, who does her best to disseminate and make information about this pathology known. It is essential to raise awareness to stimulate prevention and also research to identify effective treatments. Unfortunately in this period, due to the restrictions due to the pandemic, it has not been possible for us to go beyond this testimony, but I believe that the monumental yellow Meier bridge can represent a confirmation of our attention and sensitivity to this problem which often has dramatic implications for many women."
Endometriosis is the transmigration of endometrial cells outside the cavity of the uterus:
“This anomaly – explains Dr. Paolo Cecchini, medical consultant of the municipal Covid-19 crisis unit – causes a chronic inflammatory state at the pelvic level both in the genital system and in the surrounding organs (bladder, intestine) manifesting itself with pain of variable intensity which are exacerbated especially in the menstrual phase; Furthermore, endometriosis is very often a very serious obstacle to the establishment of pregnancy. Both of these conditions can significantly worsen the quality of life of affected patients, so much so that they are considered a chronic disabling disease.
In 30/40% of cases it is an occasional finding, often during surgery for other causes, or during investigations for other pathologies: it can be deduced that it can also be absolutely asymptomatic. Suspicion may arise, in this case, when, despite various attempts, conception is not achieved.
Pain is not necessarily the only symptom; however, a particularly painful menstrual cycle that is not very responsive to painkillers can be a sign of this.
The social and social importance of this pathology, which seems to be increasing, should therefore not be underestimated, but rather taken into very serious consideration, given the possible dramatic consequences if it is ignored.
A multidisciplinary approach with minimally invasive endoscopic surgery and suitable medical therapy are able to resolve the problem with a significant improvement in the quality of life and with the return to the possibility of conception."
From the lack of knowledge and the need to develop prevention arises the need to raise awareness among women themselves of the dangers of the disease.
“The lack of information regarding this pathology – underlines councilor Lumiera – means that there is no adequate prevention, the only weapon currently available to promptly stem its consequences. Approximately 3 million women in Italy suffer from it (10 percent of the population. For this reason, on the occasion of endometriosis awareness month, we accepted the invitation of Team Italy of WorldWide Endomarch (an association that deals with of the problem), to shine the light on this pathology. Numerous initiatives are implemented throughout the world during the month of March to ensure that there is greater knowledge about this pathology. Particularly important is, without a doubt, the WorldWide Endomarch organized in 55 capitals of the world. The Italian edition of the eight-year walk has been organized by Team Italy and takes place in Rome: this year, unfortunately, due to the extension of the Covid19 health emergency, a virtual edition is planned scheduled for Saturday 27 March 2021. For this date it has been decided to promote a symbolic action throughout the Italian territory by requesting local administrators to illuminate a monument in yellow which helps the dissemination action regarding this pathology".
“Endometriosis is a disabling disease to which attention has only recently begun to be paid, yet many, even women themselves, are unaware of its existence and effects. In 2006, when my Club, Zonta, started talking about it, we found ourselves completely unprepared for this disease. Unfortunately, little has changed since then. Raising awareness among women not to underestimate the symptoms is the first objective of the inclusion in 'March Woman', but we would also like to highlight how the Consultation is close to all those who suffer from it: you are not alone, talk about it, don't marginalize yourself. The consequences of this disease are subtle and we would like there to be greater awareness to avoid the forms of depression that we often encounter due to everything that Endometriosis brings with it" - declares Nadia Biancato, president of the Equal Opportunities Council of the city of Alessandria .
