Adoption of the Tenth Resolution for a Moratorium on Executions at the UN
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani expressed satisfaction with the vote at the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on Tenth Biennial Resolution for a Universal Moratorium on the Death Penalty.
Compared to 2022, the number of supports for adoption – including that of Italy – is grew from 125 to 131 reaching a new record. The Minister Tajani states that “this significant result confirms the strong signal from the international community towards a progressive move away from this unjust and inhuman practice, which represents a serious violation of the right to life”.
This year our country has conducted the long and complex negotiations in the General Assembly together to Argentina. The entire diplomatic network, starting with the Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York, has carried out intense action to to foster the broadest support for the Resolution. Italy and Argentina will continue to work in view of the subsequent vote on the text by the plenary of the UN General Assembly in mid-December.
“This important result is also the fruit of a close synergy between the Farnesina and the main civil society organizations, including Amnesty International Italy, the Community of Sant'Egidio and Nessuno Tocchi Caino” commented Tajani.
These organizations participated yesterday in the periodic meeting of the Task Force on the Death Penalty, chaired by the Undersecretary George SilliThe work of the task force was also an opportunity to discuss some initiatives of the three NGOs present to support the Universal campaign for the abolition of capital punishment, in particular the meeting organized by Sant'Egidio at the end of November in Rome which will see the participation of numerous Justice Ministers from African and Asian countries.
