The Senate denies authorization to try Senator and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini
The Senate has denied authorization to try the senator and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini, under investigation Milano for defamation against the commander of the Sea Watch 3 Carola Rackete.
With 82 votes in favour, 60 against and 5 abstentions, the Senate accepted the report of the Committee for Parliamentary Immunities, which in February had expressed itself against Salvini's trial: the opinion of the Council was, however, not binding and had to be confirmed by the senators . The accusations refer to sentences uttered by Salvini in 2019, when he was Interior Minister.
Rackete was arrested after violating the orders of the Italian authorities and bringing the Sea Watch 3 to the port of Lampedusa on the evening of 29 June 2019 to disembark the 40 migrants who had been on board the ship for more than two weeks. However, his arrest had not been validated by the judge for preliminary investigations in Agrigento.
rocket had decided to sue Salvini in reference to some posts published by the minister on social networks and some public statements, in which he had defined her «braggart, outlaw, accomplice of traffickers, potential murderer, criminal, criminal, pirate, someone who tried to kill financiers and kill five Italian soldiers, who made an attempt on the lives of soldiers on duty, who deliberately risked killing five boys and who spends his time breaking Italian laws and playing politics on the skin of the unfortunate".
