Minister Antonio Tajani: "the agreement on migrants with Albania respects all EU rules".
The agreement with Albania, in addition to giving the possibility of using some areas of Albanian territory with Italy to set up centers for migrants, demonstrates that we can collaborate for the management of the migratory emergency.
The agreement aims to “Countering human trafficking, preventing human trafficking and welcoming those who have the right to protection: these are the three objectives of the agreement signed today by Italy and Albania”Said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Thanks to the collaboration with Albania, Italy will be able to build two structures in Albania "for the management of illegal migrants: they will be able to initially accommodate up to three thousand people who will remain here for the time to process asylum applications and, possibly, for repatriation purposes", explained Giorgia Meloni. “The agreement on the management of migratory flows between Italy and Albania does not concern minors, pregnant women and vulnerable subjects”, the Prime Minister highlighted, adding “The jurisdiction within these centers will be Italian. In the port of Shengjin the disembarkation and identification procedures will be taken care of, while in another more internal area another structure based on the CPR model will be built. Albania collaborates with its police forces with the security forces and external surveillance of the structures". The spokesperson of the European Commission, Anitta Hipper, during the daily press conference of the EU executive, regarding the agreement between Albania and Italy, he declared that “before we can go into detail, but from the first information we see this is not the same case” as the UK-Rwanda deal. But, I repeat, we need detailed information."
