Food for Gaza: scanner delivered to Cyprus to facilitate the transit of emergency aid.

As part of the humanitarian initiative of the Italian Government “Food for Gaza”, launched on March 11 by the deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Antonio Tajani, took place this morning at Larnaca (Cyprus) the handover ceremony to the Cypriot customs authorities of one latest generation scanner to facilitate the transit of emergency aid to Gaza.

«Today's is another important piece that adds to the mosaic of actions implemented by the Italian Government to provide concrete help to the civilian population of Gaza", commented the deputy prime minister Tajani. «Thanks to a close synergy between various players in the Italian system, the business world and multilateral bodies»he continued Tajani «we are providing the Cyprus authorities with a control system that will facilitate and speed up the transit of humanitarian goods to Gaza».

Lo scanner was made available byPort Authority of Gioia Tauro thanks to the coordination with the Customs and Monopolies Agency and the Department of Civil Protection, who actively participate in the humanitarian center for Gaza in Cyprus. The scanner, transported to Cyprus free of charge by the shipping company Grimaldi Lines, will allow checks on humanitarian products that will be sent through the “maritime corridor” from Cyprus to Gaza. The contribution of the Customs Agency also includes the sending of three teams of trainers who will assist the Cypriot authorities in the implementation and management of the equipment.

The ceremony took place after last Friday's telephone conversation between the Minister Tajani and his Cypriot counterpart Constantinos Kombos, during which the collaboration between Italy e Cyprus aimed at alleviating the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza Strip and to guarantee peace and stability throughout the Mediterranean basin.

In addition to World Food Program, are part of the initiative Food for Gaza also there FAO, the International Federation of Red Cross Society and Red Crescent, Italian Red Cross, and the Civil protectionin addition toCustoms agency and numerous other Italian realities.
