Farnesina: «Francesco Flauto will soon return to Italy».
He will return to Italy soon Francesco Flute, originally from Battipaglia, sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison in Romania on charges of drug trafficking and drug possession, where he will serve the remainder of his sentence. This is made known Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
Following the final ruling, on February 14th, Flauto was transferred from the Constanta-Poarta Alba penitentiary to the Bucharest-Rahova prison for the execution of the sentence. Next, the man introduced formal request to request transfer to Italy to serve the remainder of the sentence.
THEItalian Embassy in Bucharest, in close coordination with the Farnesina, immediately followed the case, providing the necessary assistance, through frequent consular visits including the Head of Mission, and raising local authorities' awareness of his health condition on several occasions, on compliance with European standards regarding prison conditions and on the expectation that the Romanian authorities would quickly authorize Mr. Flute's transfer to Italy.
During his mission to Bucharest on 6 and 7 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, had urged his counterpart, Luminita Odobescu, and the Romanian Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, so that penitentiary treatment was in line with European standards and could be promoted move to Italy
Also thanks to the awareness-raising work of the Embassy, the Romanian Authorities considered the request presented by Flauto favorably: on July 14th, his lawyer confirmed to the Embassy that the Court of Appeal in Italy recognized the Romanian sentence on July 12th. It will be necessary to complete some steps between the respective Ministries of Justice and the Interior of the two countries, after which the Romanian authorities will be able to organize the transfer of Flute in agreement with the Italian authorities.
“The Embassy in Bucharest, in close collaboration with the Farnesina National Protection Unit, will continue to follow the matter with the utmost attention, providing the compatriot with the necessary consular assistance to facilitate his speedy transfer to Italy.”
