Calabria, drought in the Crotone area: crisis table activated in the Region to deal with the emergency.
On the initiative of Calabria Region, a working group has been established which will have among its tasks the constant evaluation of the situation, the identification of appropriate and necessary remedies, and raising awareness of the importance of the water resource and the multiple use of water.
The regional councilor for agriculture will convene and preside over the first meeting of the body, Gianluca Gallo. With him, together with the heads of the Agriculture and Environment Departments, also the representatives of the Province of Crotone and the Municipalities of Crotone, Isola Capo Rizzuto, Cutro, Rocca di Neto and Cirò Marina, as well as the representatives of the Consorzio di Bonifica, Sorical and A2A, a management company for the Sila water basins which we look to to best deal with the lack of rain.
And it was from A2A, as emerged during the discussion, which lasted for most of the day on Wednesday 14 February, that important communications arrived.
In particular, it emerged how society is adopting management strategies of the Arvo and Ampollino reservoirs oriented towards the accumulation of water resources, producing hydroelectric energy by exclusively swirling natural supplies, without therefore affecting the reserve established for the satisfaction of priority drinking water and irrigation needs.
A2A also reiterated its maximum willingness to guarantee the drinking water supply of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, until the Sant'Anna basin is restored to the service of the Municipalities, thus making up for its temporary inoperability.
By unanimous will and commitment of its members, it was also established that the crisis table will plan on an annual basis the releases of the reservoirs in consideration of the water availability and priority needs (drinking, irrigation and industrial) in the territories downstream of the plants of hydroelectric production.
This program will be monitored in the coming weeks and possibly modified depending on the water availability expected at the same time. The table will also have to monitor the implementation of the infrastructural modernization programs of the irrigation and drinking water network.
