Brescia, Valter Muchetti discusses the reopening of street markets

Brescia, Valter Muchetti, Councilor for Commerce of the Municipality of Brescia declares:

The recovery after the health emergency period required great efforts from the Municipality
organizational and citizens an effort to adapt.
We have chosen to return to normality gradually, applying in a manner
scrupulously comply with national and regional regulations. This has sometimes resulted in some
discomfort, necessary to protect everyone's health.
Regarding the issue of street vendors, I am sorry that some of my
statements have been extrapolated from the serious and well-argued context in which they exist
have been expressed and have been taken as an absolute value.
The discussion and dialogue with the trade associations, still open, has been long,
tight and not simple, but I think it led to a balanced choice.
The decision to move only nine stalls in total in the Emporium market comes from
two reports from the Local Police, as has been repeatedly explained by the manager
of the Commerce Sector and from the Local Commander to the representatives of the
associations which, I repeat, I myself have met and heard several times in recent days and
which, if necessary, I am willing to meet and hear again.
I remember that our only objective was and is the reduction of gatherings and that the
Local documentation forced us to make a choice: whether we didn't move the desks
we would have had to close the market, which we convincingly avoided. Me
we would like to underline that this is a fundamental point of the question, because the
the only options on the table were these: moving some desks or suspending them
of the market.

Nobody wants to penalize street vendors and I understand the difficulties of those who have to start again
after complex months, but it is our duty to guarantee all possible safety criteria. AND
a fundamental priority and doing so is an effort in which we must all participate.
We are in Brescia, one of the cities that suffered most during the emergency,
which has paid, and continues to pay, a very high price in sick people and victims.
I ask the street vendors, therefore, not to raise the tone of a confrontation that finds in me a
attentive and responsible interlocutor, who shares the most important goal with them:
return to work safely, ensuring the well-being of the entire community.
Distancing and non-gathering remain a priority imposed by law and by
common sense and I trust that street vendors can also make an active contribution and
proactive to ensure that the market can continue in everyone's interest.
