Pistoia: On January 6th the Firefighters' Befana descends from the Bell Tower and the Three Wise Men arrive

The Befana, while flying over the Piazza del Duomo to reach the children and young people who are waiting for her, has to deal with a breakdown in her flying broom that makes her end up inside the Bell Tower, 66 meters high, remaining stuck. She asks for help from everyone, even Santa Claus, without success, so she decides to turn to the Fire Department. “They always help everyone… they will help me too!” he thinks. His appeal does not go unheard: the fire engine bursts into the square with sirens blaring and flashing lights on, and with quick and skilled maneuvers, The Befana is “harnessed” and slowly slid from a height of 37 metres on a special descender to the ground, “flying” above the heads of those present.

Even this year, for the 31st time, on January 6th at sunset the Befana will descend from the bell tower of Pistoia, for the initiative organized by the National Association of Firefighters of the National Onlus Corps, with the Municipality of Pistoia and the Pistoia Fire Brigade Command.

For the first time this year, the Three Kings parade will also be organized for Epiphany: at 10 am they will leave from Piazza San Francesco to reach the Cathedral in Piazza del Duomo and lay down their gifts in front of the Holy Family. The initiative is organized by the Municipality of Pistoia, with the Diocese of Pistoia, the citizens' committee of Pistoia, the Districts, the Historical Group of the City of Pistoia.

From the morning (from 10.30) until dusk in Piazza del Duomo, 2500 stockings provided by Conad Nord Ovest will be distributed to children. At 16 the party will begin awaiting the arrival of the Befana, animated by Lorenzo Branchetti, protagonist of Melevisione and many other Rai programs, by Geronimo Stilton, intellectual mouse, character of a very famous series of children's books spread throughout the world and translated into 50 languages and by the Orkestraccia Light made up of 5 musicians. The square will be open to a maximum of 6500 people, and around a hundred Firefighters will participate in the event.

The events for the Epiphany were presented in the Town Hall in the presence of Alessandro Sabella, Councilor for Traditions; Don Luca Carlesi, archpriest of the Cathedral; Don Ugo Feraci, parish priest of San Paolo Centro Storico; Don Alessio Bartolini, episcopal master of ceremonies; Federico Coppini, deacon of the Cathedral; Fabrizio Priori, commander of the Pistoia Fire Brigade; Leonardo Melani, president of the National Association of Fire Brigades, Pistoia section and the Conad Nord Ovest members of Pistoia.Pistoia: Il 6 Gennaio la Befana dei vigili del Fuoco si cala dal Campanile e arrivano i Re Magi"The historic descent from the Befana bell tower is joined for the first time this year by the parade of the Three Kings, an event that we are sure will become part of the city's traditions. He said Councilor Alessandro Sabella. “This day, which always has a great response in terms of attendance and which is very popular with children and adults alike, is made possible by teamwork: I thank the offices and local entities that worked to organize it".

"The organization of this initiative is now consolidated: it has been running for 31 years and is supported by a very important structure. - Said Fabrizio Priori, commander of the Pistoia Fire Brigade -. We have a dedicated organizational staff, with a maneuver coordinator, and each area is managed with precision. From our point of view, it is essentially a technical maneuver, which reproduces the operations that we also carry out in rescue interventions, so these are well-tested and tested procedures. However, there is also a strong emotional component: going down in front of thousands of people, including many children, is a moment full of meaning. The Firefighters always participate with enthusiasm and pride, knowing that they are giving unique emotions to the citizens”.

"It is a pleasure for us to continue to support initiatives for our city during this holiday season. – they declared Conad Nord Ovest members of Pistoia –. After the success of Santa’s House and the Market in Piazza Spirito Santo, the donation of 2500 Epiphany stockings to so many children fills us with joy. For us in Pistoia, January 6th has become a fixed appointment for everyone in Piazza del Duomo and we hope that, weather permitting, the spectacular initiative can have the success it deserves.".

Since the post-war period, in almost all the barracks of the Italian Fire Department, the Epiphany celebration has been held for the children of the employees. Since 1994, the Fire Department of Pistoia, who already made the Epiphany "land" from the roof of the barracks, decided - first in Italy - to extend the initiative to all the children of the city, moving to the Piazza del Duomo and making the Epiphany lower from the bell tower. The 2025 edition will be the 31st.
