Oristano: Carnival 2025 tradition and medieval history of the Royal Cities of Sardinia

Carnival 2025 in Oristano officially kicks off on Saturday 8 February at 17pm with an event that will bring the tradition and medieval history of the Royal Cities of Sardinia to the heart of the city.

THEevent's audience, which was born from an idea of ​​the Pro loco within the framework of the programme of Municipality of Oristano, with the collaboration of Oristano Foundation and Youth Consultation, will see the participation of historical groups from different cities of the island.

They will be present at Crossbowmen Company Castel di Castro from Cagliari, the Flag-wavers and Musicians of the City of Candelieri from Sassari, the Musicians and Flag-wavers of the Castello district from Iglesias, the group The Malaspina – City of Bosa and the Tzur group of ancient Tharros.

A represent Oristano there will be i Drummers and Trumpeters of the Pro Loco.

"The initiative represents a unique opportunity to reunite, for the first time, five of the seven Royal Cities of Sardinia, those which, in medieval times, were not subject to fiefdom, but to direct royal jurisdiction, enjoying special privileges and concessions. - emphasizes the Mayor Massimiliano Sanna.

Through the establishment of historical groups, these cities have kept their medieval identity alive, promoting the value of their roots.

Oristano enthusiastically welcomes this event which, in addition to representing a moment of great spectacle and involvement, strengthens the cultural identity of our community and is an extraordinary opportunity to rediscover and enhance our traditions, strengthening the bond with the history of the Royal Cities of Sardinia."

La Royal Cities Festival will start at 17pm in Piazza Roma and will continue along the streets of the historic center, ending in Piazza Eleonora.

Trumpets, drums, flags and ancient sounds will accompany the parade, creating asuggestive and enveloping atmosphere, which will officially kick off the Carnival of Oristano.

"The 2025 Carnival is born with a special edition characterized by a particularly rich program that, starting from Candelora, will accompany citizens and visitors with weekly events until the Sartiglia on March 2 and 4 – adds the Mayor Sanna.

For the first time we are planning a 'long' and particularly rich carnival. This year, the Municipality, thanks also to the collaboration of the Regional Department of Tourism, Crafts and Commerce, the Pro Loco, the Oristano Foundation and the Youth Council, but also of local associations and cultural operators, has created a series of initiatives that will animate the city with parades, shows, exhibitions and food and wine events, making the wait for the Sartiglia even more engaging and festive.".
