Seneghe, Sardinia. A "giant's tomb" found in a private home: seized by the Carabinieri.

The Carabinieri of Seneghe return to the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia an archaeological find pertaining to a giant's tomb.

Last week a stone element pertaining to a "giant's tomb", now completely destroyed, near the site of the Lande di Narbolia nuraghe, was released from seizure and definitively returned to the Superintendency of Archeology, fine arts and landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia by the Carabinieri of the Seneghe station.

SIt is a door ashlar or "manhole cover" of a giant's tomb (almost square slab 65 cm high, 63/70 cm wide, 20 cm thick with a rectangular relief of 50 x 42 cm on the rear facade), which was completely destroyed a few decades ago during stone removal works on the land adjacent to the Lande nuraghe and the connected ancient settlement.

The Carabinieri of Seneghe, during a normal check on the gun holders of the jurisdiction carried out in March last, they found the stone slab in the garage of a private home which, from a first careful inspection, suggested an actual "cultural interest". The photos of the object, sent to the archaeologist official of the Superintendence of Cagliari, confirmed that it was an archaeological find pertaining to a giant's tomb. The exhibit was seized and the person reported was released to the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Court of Oristano as it was held responsible for "violations relating to archaeological research" - art. 175 of Legislative Decree 42/2004.

Thanks to the investigations of the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Oristano, another small piece of the Italian cultural heritage was saved from safe dispersion, and the Superintendence of Archaeology, fine arts and landscape for the metropolitan city of Cagliari and the provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia of Cagliari, a state body competent in the specific sector, will take care of its valorization and definitive relocation.
