Tortolì (Nuoro), attempted fraud against a 74-year-old using the “telephone spoofing” technique
On the afternoon of last December 30th a 74-year-old resident of Tortolì contacted the local Carabinieri Station to report having received a call from a person identifying himself as belonging to the Carabinieri and, in particular, to the Nuoro Carabinieri Company.
The victim was made aware of an ongoing investigation into several branch managers of the Banco di Sardegna who, together with their employees, were defrauding numerous account holders by making undue withdrawals from their current accounts..
By anticipating this risk, the scammer was trying to convince his interlocutor to make a bank transfer of 100.000 euros through his branch, an operation necessary to collaborate with the investigation and secure the money in his current account. The victim, having realised the attempted scam, immediately contacted the Tortolì Carabinieri Station, from which he received instructions not to carry out any operation and to file a complaint to allow the identification of those responsible.
The scammer, as has already happened in the past months on other similar occasions, in addition to pretending to be a member of the Carabinieri, also used the technique of "telephone spoofing", through which he manipulated the telephone number displayed by the victim. making it actually traceable back to the Carabinieri Company Command of Nuoro.
After the valuable complaint filed by the victim at the Carabinieri Station in Tortolì, the military immediately started the first investigations aimed at identifying those responsible, who after the first call attempted to contact the victim other times with a mobile phone number not traceable to any institution.
The Carabinieri, through the organization of ad hoc seminars, the distribution of leaflets at Post Offices, churches, oratories and other meeting places, has recently carried out (and continues to carry out) a careful and constant awareness-raising action regarding this type of scam, which is carried out by gaining the victim's trust through various techniques, such as the one adopted in this case.
It is important not to share your personal data or your bank account access data under any circumstances and it is also essential to limit confidentiality on the telephone and on the Internet as much as possible, keeping in mind that no Carabiniere or member of the Police Force will ever ask for sums of money to resolve problems. (neither for road accidents, nor for phantom bails to alleviate problems with the law, nor even to secure the money in one's current account).
In case of requests of this nature, it is essential to immediately contact the single emergency number 112, through which it will be possible to ask for the necessary support and prevent the consummation of the scam.
