Martin Scorsese arrives in Sicily to make a documentary on ancient shipwrecks

The award-winning American director Martin Scorsese has chosen the island for his new documentary. Filming will take place in some cities of Sicily including: Palermo, Favignana, Pantelleria and many others. In addition, underwater filming and in the archaeological sites of the island are planned.

The new job by the very famous and award-winning American director will be based on a project by underwater archaeologist Lisa Briggs, professor and researcher at Cranfield University in England, and will be co-produced by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Sicilian Region, from “Sikelia Productions” which is headed by Scorsese himself, from Sunk Costs Producions, Chad A. Verdi and LBI Entertainment.

«We welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm - said councilor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato - making available all the sites, archaeological parks and museums under the jurisdiction of the department, given the importance of the project and the huge return in terms of image for Sicily and its cultural heritage".

The shooting will be done during the summer as well as in the Strait of Sicily, with the collaboration of the Superintendency of the Sea for the entire marine and underwater part, also in the Trapani area, or in the archaeological park of Selinunte, in the site of Marsala-Lilibeo, of the Caves of Cusa, in Pantelleria, The poor - where is the recent discovery of the “Marausa 2” wreck– and, again, to the Dancing Satyr Museum of Mazara del Vallo, to the Agostino Pepoli Regional Museum of Trapani, and, finally, at the Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum in Palermo.

Among the chosen locations there are, Furthermore, the Tonnara of Favignana, the island of Mozia, Erice while, in the province of Palermo, Polizzi Generosa, hometown of the director's grandparents. Other locations are still being identified.
