With Katabasis, Samantha Casella signs an intense and visionary work that confirms her role as original voice of contemporary Italian auteur cinemaA multiple award-winning filmmaker at international festivals and acclaimed by film critics, the director returns to explore the deepest reaches of the human soul, creating a story that oscillates between reality and dream, memory, pain, and transformation.
Katabasis represents the second chapter of the "Subconscious Trilogy", an artistic project started with Holy War and destined to end with The tenderness of the snake, currently underway. A coherent and radical journey, rooted in the director's essay presented at Giuseppe Ferlito's Immagina Film School, and which today reaches full expressive maturity.
A prison house and a secret love
At the heart of the narrative of Katabasis there is Aron (played by Francesco Leone), a young star who lives a secret relationship Nora, played by Samantha Casella herself, a woman twenty years older than her and an enigmatic figure, known only to those who gravitate around the majestic villa where the couple lives. The house, a closed and suspended space, is gradually transformed into a symbolic prison, a theatre of secrets, lies, hypocrisies and underlying tensions.
The fragile balance between Aron and Nora is thrown into crisis by the hostility of a cynical manager, whose aversion seems to have its roots in a dark past. Ambiguous characters move around the protagonists, marked by inconsolable pains, which gradually reveal a web of deception and unspoken information, pushing the story towards an increasingly disturbing dimension.
A dreamlike and futuristic direction
In Katabasis, Samantha Casella consciously renounces a linear narrative to embrace a dreamlike, surreal and futuristic direction, capable of conveying the harshness of a "blinding, jarring, decadent" everyday life. Reality, in his cinema, is never neutral: it is distorted, filtered by the subconscious, permeated by symbols and visions.
«I am not interested in telling an empty reality – the film seems to suggest – but what is hidden beneath the surface». A research that invites the viewer to look inside, to confront one's own dark areas, with one's deepest and most fragile nature, in the hope of bringing to the surface a lost magic.
From Victim to Perpetrator: The Theme of Abuse
After giving shape to the trauma in Holy Warin Katabasis the director addresses the theme ofabuse from a complex and disturbing perspective. Nora is not simply a victim: she is a woman who, after having suffered violence, becomes a persecutor, reversing traditional roles.
«I wasn't interested in showing a woman as a victim – says Casella – but rather a woman who has become a sort of executioner, willing to put herself before everything and everyone just to survive». A courageous narrative choice, which breaks the simplifications and investigates the internal contradictions of who was injured.
Cinema as a memory of childhood
At the basis of Samantha Casella's poetics there is a profound reflection on gap between what we are as children and what we become as adults"Often what we do in life is an imperfect copy of what we dreamed of doing," explains the director. Translating this gap, this void of pathos and color, into images is an artistic and personal challenge for her.
"Trying to mix the inner hemisphere with the outer one," he says, "allows me to continue to read within myself a pure, uncontaminated aspect, which comes from my childhood." An idea of cinema as act of emotional resistance, capable of preserving the authenticity of the original gaze.
International awards and the future of the Trilogy
Katabasis he got a wide recognition at international festivals, confirming the value of Casella's research. 81th Venice International Film Festival has conquered the Best New Director Award and Starlight Award – Innovative Direction. To the New York International Cult Film Festival he won the Best Narrative Feature, best actress e Best Cinematography – Outstanding Achievement Award, while ai London Movie Awards won the award as Best Experimental Feature Film e Best Actress.
Meanwhile, the director is busy making the third and final chapter of the trilogy, The tenderness of the snake. «It is perhaps my most violent and at the same time most sentimental film», Casella anticipates. A work that will address the theme ofeternal return through a bond of love between two women, intertwining dimensions maternal and sexual.
With Katabasis, Samantha Casella confirms a cinematic vision radical, personal and deeply emotional, capable of engaging with an international audience without sacrificing its authenticity. A cinema that doesn't console, but rather digs deep.
