Messina: They pretended to be Carabinieri to defraud an elderly woman, two people reported.
First a phone call from a fake Carabiniere on duty in the province of Catania to warn an elderly woman that her daughter would have to pay a sum of money immediately, otherwise she would be arrested.
Then the same interlocutor who, together with an accomplice, goes by car in front of the victim's house, where he collects the sum of 350 euros and several valuables, requested to resolve a phantom dispute with which they had made the unfortunate woman believe that her daughter had been held in the barracks because, in the car, she had hit a minor.
This is what happened in recent days to a pensioner from Linguaglossa, surrounded by two people, already known to the Police, also for specific crimes, then identified, through an immediate investigation activity and reported by the Carabinieri for aggravated fraud.
According to the reconstruction by the military of the Arma, the elderly lady, realizing the deception, would have warned her son who, in turn, immediately called the emergency number of 112 to report the scam. Having received the news, the Operations Center of the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Messina, activated by that of Catania, coordinated the searches by alerting all the patrols in service in the Peloritan territory.
The car sought, with the two individuals on board, was then tracked down and stopped near the Messina piers by the Carabinieri of the Radiomobile Unit who carried out a search.
Hidden in the car, the military found and seized a sum of 11.500 euros and various valuables, including a ring and a wedding ring hidden in the shoe worn by one of the two subjects.
Some of the valuables were the result of a scam carried out on the elderly woman, while the others probably came from similar episodes. The two alleged scammers, originally from Campania and who were leaving Sicily, were then taken to the barracks by the military of the Arma who reported them to the Judicial Authority.
It must be said that, also thanks to the information campaign in the territory conducted by the Carabinieri to prevent scams, it has allowed in many cases to avoid the commission of these crimes.
It happened, for example, a few days ago, in the small village of Gaggi.
There, a 95-year-old woman received a phone call from a fake Carabinieri Marshal, who told her that money was needed to avoid consequences for her granddaughter who was involved in a serious road accident.
The worried lady had already prepared the money to give to the stranger, but it was a neighbor who, having read the elaborate brochure distributed by the Carabinieri containing advice on how to prevent scams, immediately made the elderly lady understand that she had been called scammers who had made everything up.
The Carabinieri of the Gaggi Station, as part of the awareness campaign, had distributed numerous flyers of this type and put up posters at the post office and commercial establishments in the town.
