Messina, city mourning declared for the death of Totò Schillaci.

“The premature death of Totò Schillaci has caused deep dismay and emotion in our community for the important football contribution that he has made to the city of Messina since he was very young, as well as for his active participation in city life”. These are the words in the introduction by Mayor Federico Basile of today, Thursday 19 September 2024 – with which it has decided to proclaim a day of mourning for the day of the funeral, which will take place tomorrow, Friday 20 September, at 11.30:XNUMX in the Cathedral of Palermo.

Considering that the proclamation of mourning is the way in which the Administration intends to solemnly and tangibly manifest its condolences and those of the entire community, Basile therefore decided to invite the population of Messina to witness the moving participation in conjunction with the celebration of the funeral of Totò Schillaci, to remember a great champion of the football scene at local, national and international level.

Therefore, for tomorrow, Friday 20th, the Mayor has ordered that the flags of the Town Hall and those of the other municipal buildings be flown at half-mast; to observe a minute of silence and reflection in the workplace in conjunction with the start of the funeral rite, scheduled for 11.30:11.30; and to also observe a minute of reflection in schools, again at XNUMX:XNUMX, and in any case in the morning. The provision invites owners of commercial activities, political, trade union, production organizations and sports associations to express their condolences by participating in the ways they deem most appropriate in the city's mourning. Finally, all public events that may be scheduled are suspended.

“With the city mourning we want to offer once again the gratitude of all Messina to Totò Schillaci, the absolute protagonist with his goals in the history of football and who gave us so many emotions”, says Mayor Basile.

“We have decided to honor the memory of the bomber Schillaci also in our schools, even if the majority of students due to their young age have not had the opportunity to appreciate the feats of the great champion, so that the minute of silence and reflection can be an opportunity to deepen the value of sport for their growth through the memory of Totò, a symbol of tenacity, strength and a great desire for redemption, as an example for our young people”, added theCouncillor for Sport Massimo Finocchiaro.
