Brolo (Messina), fake Carabiniere tries to deceive an elderly woman. Scam foiled
Also this time, as in other recent episodes that occurred in the province, the fake Carabiniere scam didn't work, also because the victim, a 70-year-old woman, immediately understood the scam and, also thanks to the information received from the Carabinieri, the real ones, during an information campaign in which he had participated and which was held in a meeting point in Brolo last August, he adopted the right precautions which allowed the scam planned by the criminals to be foiled and the investigations to begin.
The elderly woman was lured with a text message to her cell phone, in which she was informed that her bank account had been seized because suspicious purchases had been made. Subsequently, the woman was contacted by a fake Carabinieri marshal who, from a landline, requested the withdrawal of a sum of money that would then be used to proceed with the release. On the woman's phone, the call, as has already happened in other cases, appeared to be the number of a Carabinieri Station, specifically the Brolo one, certainly made to appear by the scammers through applications downloadable from the Internet.
Realizing that she had been the victim of a scam, the seventy-year-old cut off contact with the criminals and immediately called 112. The woman, in fact, who had participated in one of the meetings on the subject organized by the military of the Carabinieri Station of Brolo last summer, recalled the way in which these scams are committed, often to the detriment of people of a certain age and in which road accidents or legal cases involving relatives or the exposure of bank accounts to risk are simulated, all things invented by these criminals, who pretend to be Carabinieri, lawyers or bank managers, with the fraudulent aim of taking money, cash or obtaining transfers, even large ones.
What happened shows how important it is to talk about this phenomenon. Obviously, as the Carabinieri repeat several times during meetings with the elderly on the subject of scams, It is essential to call 112 immediately, both by those who have suffered an attempted scam and by those who, unfortunately, have realized they have been a victim; in fact, calling the emergency number can allow the military and other police forces to intervene immediately and quickly identify those responsible.. The collaboration of victims and all citizens informed about fraudulent events or situations often becomes indispensable.
