Nova Siri: Fraud against the elderly, two alleged perpetrators arrested in the act.

The Carabinieri of the Policoro Company have arrested two men aged 42 and 30, originally from Campania, caught in the act of the alleged crime of attempted aggravated fraud in collaboration and completed aggravated fraud in collaboration.

Following several reports of attempted scams in the municipality of Nova Siri received on the emergency number 112 by victims or their relatives, all the patrols of the Arma in service in the territory of competence of the Carabinieri Company of Policoro were promptly activated, one of which, in the Marina di Nova Siri district, noticed, in Viale Siris, a suspicious car heading at high speed towards the SS 106. The car was promptly stopped and the two occupants were identified, and they were subjected to a thorough check, from which emerged the discovery of a bag containing gold jewelry, valuable watches and the sum of 410 euros in banknotes of various denominations.

The subsequent investigations by the military, thanks to their in-depth knowledge of the territory and their relationship of full trust with the population, allowed them to identify a 64-year-old local woman who, alone at home, had been defrauded shortly before.

In particular, the woman had received a phone call on her landline from a self-styled Marshal of the Carabinieri who informed her of three road accidents caused by her son and that, for this reason, he was under arrest at a Carabinieri barracks. At the same time, the woman received another phone call on her mobile phone from a self-styled lawyer who, in confirming what the Marshal with whom she was still on the line had said, informed her of the need to deliver to one of his collaborators, also a lawyer who would appear shortly, the sum of 7.100 euros necessary for the payment of the fines and the release of her son.

Shortly after, while the victim was still on the line with both interlocutors, the lawyer's so-called assistant knocked on her door and the lady, not having access to the sum of money requested, handed over 410 euros and the gold jewellery.

The money and valuables, recognized by the 64-year-old who was still incredulous about what had happened, were returned to the unfortunate woman who, reassured, expressed a deep sense of gratitude towards the military personnel who had intervened.

The arrested, after the formal procedures, by order of the Public Prosecutor of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Matera, were transferred to the local prison. Following the hearing to validate the arrest by the Judge of Preliminary Investigations of the Court of Matera, the two were placed under house arrest.
